Psdtuts+: Typography, the Art of Text – Basix

Typography and how to adjust typography from within Photoshop was brought up during our weekly meeting Tuesday. Almost if on cue, Psdtuts+ (http://psd NULL.tutsplus NULL.com/) as part of their Photoshop Basix (http://psd NULL.tutsplus NULL.com/sessions/photoshop-basix/) series released a video tutorial on this very subject. The tutorial focuses more on the keyboard shortcuts than the panel commands, but I think you’ll find the keyboard shortcuts to be far more intuitive. If you need to know how to properly set leading and kerning, or have no idea what the hell that means, be sure to check this video out.

The Minimalist Guide to Leaving Your Soul-Crushing Day Job

This article was found by one of my daily reads, Lifehacker (http://lifehacker NULL.com).

As budding artists a lot of us know first hand (myself included) that our biggest roadblock to taking our projects to the next level is often our day job. The start up time for a comic to start earning a livable income, if it indeed happens at all, can be considerable. In the meantime you still have bills to pay. This usually entails a very considerate and gainfully employed significant other, or you’re working a job you have to take in order to support the job you want to take. Read the rest of this entry »

Whether it be for a panel background or your website, a repeating background might be just the touch you need. Here’s a tutorial to help get you started. The tutorial is based in Illustrator, but the techniques therein could potentially apply to your graphic editor of choice as well.

Use a Tablet to Create Stunning Illustrations

Use a Tablet to Create Stunning Comic Book Fan Art IllustrationsThis tutorial goes a bit more in depth than what most people would do for your every day comic, but the techniques included therein may interest you, especially if you are someone who usually works in grayscale looking to colorize your work. This alternative coloring technique uses adjustment layers and masks instead of hand brushing the color. (Not as scary as it sounds.)

How to Display Facebook Fan Count in Text

How to Display Facebook Fan Count inTextWebcomics.com (http://www NULL.webcomics NULL.com/home/2010/4/22/the-facebook-like-button NULL.html) told us how to add a Facebook Like button to our web pages, but what if you wanted to display how many people liked you without using their default, and in my opinion, very boring template?

Hongkiat.com (http://www NULL.hongkiat NULL.com) has a quick tutorial on how to display the number of fans you have in text (http://www NULL.hongkiat NULL.com/blog/how-to-display-facebook-fan-count-in-text/). Because it’s outputting in text and not locked into a plugin, you can style it to look however you want with CSS, javascript, or whatever else you happen to use. You do need to move a couple files and code snippits around, but it’s mostly copy and paste so it’s not a hard technique to wrap your head around. How you use it after that is up to you.
